This year I’ve ordered my first Lucky Bag from Beautylish.
What is a Lucky Bag?
The fukubukuro are a modern Japanese New Year custom. Shops put unknown random items in bags and sell them for a cheaper price than the value of the products in the Lucky Bag is, usually it is worth double the amount you pay for it. Stores mainly sell the commodities of the past year in order to make space for new products. The Beautylish Lucky Bag is filled with make-up and skincare and comes in two versions, a small one for 75$, the big one 150$ and is currently available in the US only.
You can buy fukubukuro from clothing shops, pet stores, cosmetic retailers and even Apple. In Japan you can get them in physical stores as well as online! You should know that in any case the run on the bags is pretty big and therefore you should buy early at sales start. If you happen to be in Tokyo at the end of the year and want to treat yourself to Lucky Bags from offline retailers you should know that the people start standing in line hours before the doors open.
What’s in my Beautylish Lucky Bag 2018?
- Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser 32 $
- Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick in Checkmate 18 $
- Wayne Goss Brush 16 Large Eye Shadow Crease Brush 30 $
- Cover Fx Mattifying Primer with Anti-Acne Treatment 38 $
- Stila Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow in Kitten Karma 24 $
- Jouer Cosmetics Skinny Dip Collection Ultra Foil Shimmer Shadows 40 $
Value: 182 $ (+ shipping, taxes and toll to Germany 37.73 = 219.73 $)
I ordered the standard version for 75 $, plus 15 $ shipping and 18$ taxes and toll, so altogether 108 $.
Shipping to Germany is usually free if you spend 70$ or more, but because of the amount of product and the weight you have to pay extra.
Noteworthy is the fact that not everybody receives the same products. Products or brands that other got in their Lucky Bags 2018 are for example Jeffree Star Androgyny Palette, Anastasia Beverly Hills Prism Eye Shadow Palette, Natasha Denona, Charlotte Tilbury and BECCA.
You can choose between two options „fair/medium“ and „dark/deep“, whereby the items supposedly suit your skin tone. Complexion products like foundation or concealer are excluded from bags for obvious reasons. Some extra-lucky bags contain Beautylish gift cards on top of it.
Are Lucky Bags worth it?
Yes and no. It depends on your expectations. In my case the eye-shadow palette isn’t my cup of tea as well as the lipstick. Financially speaking you definitively get bank for your buck. If you don’t like surprises and/or can’t afford to buy a bag that may not contain anything you like or need I would recommend to stay away from it. However, if you like mystery items and don’t mind the uncontrollable content go for it! As far as my experience: I’ve used toe eye-shadow a couple of times, despite being a little intimidated by the colors. I may not get the most use out of it, but at least I was forced to come out of my make-up comfort zone.
Have you ever purchased a Lucky Bag? Are you intrigued to buy one next year? Have you used one of the products I’ve received?
